Valuing Stocks and Shares for Probate

Stocks and shares probate valuation - facts and figures

Stocks and shares valuations – the facts and figures

Valuing stocks and shares is a more complex and complicated process than it might first appear.

You might think you just go to the company's website and search for their share price - job done!

Actually, that's not the case. Firstly the shares have to be valued as of the date on which the person passed away. You need to establish the upper and lower prices that the shares were at throughout the entire day and then calculate their value using a formula that complies with HMRC's valuing process.

It is also a matter of knowing where to find the share value information. If shares have been held for a few years, there may have been rights issues, the company could have been bought and sold a number of times which further complicates matters.

This is where Provals can help. We have access to all of the relevant data and even then we sometimes  need to undertake deep research to establish how the shares have evolved and changed over the years.

Once we have completed our research we provide you with a document that details the shares, their value per share and an overall value, with a summary value of all the shareholdings.

Should the Executors or beneficiaries decide to sell shares we are happy to arrange and manage this.

Please ask us for our share valuing service alongside our other Probate Support Services.
